Description

The most highly recommended tour. The excursion begins in the morning with a visit to the old fishing village of Taqah, famous for the manufacture of dried sardines and its traditional and old Dhofari houses. Visit the century-old Taqah Castle (Panoramic View), the former official residence of the Wali (Governor) of the region, and obtain a glimpse into the rich history of the region.Continue onto the ancient ruins of the once-famous city of Sumharam (Khor Rori). The city was the easternmost outpost of the Hadramawt Kingdom on the ancient incense route between the Mediterranean Sea, the Persian Gulf, and India. Khor Rori was an important port on the coast of Dhofar and one of the major trading cities with frankincense, believed to have been the hub and harbor for the shipping of frankincense (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

A picturesque drive then leads you to Mirbat, the ancient capital of Dhofar and the beginning of the Frankincense Trail. Stroll through the streets lined with old Omani abandoned houses. Then, visit Mirbat Fishing Port. Thereafter, we proceed to the Qara Mountains to explore the western part of Salalah. On a road steadily winding up a steep incline, herds of camels and cattle are a common sight, providing a scenic view of traditional Dhofari rural beauty. Proceed to the beach of Mughsail, where the white sand touches the deep blue of the ocean.

At high tide, waves burst through the natural titanic blowholes at the far end of the rocky beach, with a cave-like entrance. We thereafter continue along the road towards the western border of Oman, with its breathtaking cliffs on either side, to see the historical frankincense trees growing in their natural habitat, deep down in the valleys, dotting the dry and craggy countryside. We take a short walk into the valleys to smell the holy incense amidst the scenic view of the region. On our return journey, we make a photo stop at the lagoon at Mughsail, where migratory birds, including flamingos, are occasionally a common sight.

Empty Quarter Desert Tour (Full Day Or Sunset)

Tour No : AVR 006.

  • Duration: About 8 hours.
  • Route: Hotel/Port/Airport Wadi Dawkah – Shisr – Khazaf – Hotel/Port/Airport.

Highlights:

  • Wadi Dawakah.
  • Black Camels (If we Found).
  • Shisr (Ubar Atlantis of the Sands).
  • Khazaf Sand dunes.

Description

Welcome to Al Rub al Khali (Empty Quarter) a world of harsh extremes that may rank as both the least, and one of the most hospitable places on Earth. Al Rub al Khali (literally, “quarter of emptiness”) is the world’s largest sand sea. At more than 583,000 square kilometers. We proceed to Khazaf for a unique experience at the spectacular dunes with their changing colors running together in great impenetrable ranks and towering with vast smooth slopes and knife-like ridges. If we are lucky we will meet some Bedouins and they will surly offer us to try camel milk and dates.

We continue to Shisr to visit the ruins of the fabled Lost City of Ubar. This remarkable treasure was only discovered in 1992 with the aid of a NASA satellite, having been buried under the shifting desert sands for centuries. It is thought to be the famed ‘Atlantis of the Sands’ proposed by Lawrence of Arabia, a major hub on the caravan route between trading cities of the region. The town was reported to be a ‘paradise’, a place of unparalleled opulence that thrived as a center for trading local fragrances with exotic goods from the East.

Our last stop is at Wadi Dawkah, a UNESCO World Heritage Listed Wadi. A protected stretch of over seven thousand frankincense trees. The precious sap from these trees and others across the Oman landscape – brought the country great wealth throughout history, and increased its connections with other nations as the fragrance was traded as far away as Europe and China. Return to the hotel by afternoon. For sunset same itinerary till sunset time than back to hotel.
